  5. Uphold Lessons Learnt From Onboarding, Edo HoS Urges New Recruits

By Edebor Esther

The Edo State Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa Esq., has charged new recruits and recently absorbed civil and public servants to uphold high standards of service and put into practice the lessons they learned during the onboarding.

Okungbowa gave this counsel at the close of the two-week onboarding exercise conducted for 264 newly recruited and absorbed staff into the civil and public service in the State.

The onboarding programme is an exercise that has become an established tradition in the Edo State Public service, and is designed to bring officers up to speed with the workings of the State’s civil and public service, the provisions of the civil service rules, and their applications, ultimately equipping them with the right skills and knowledge to improve their productivity level.

During the close of the onboarding exercise, the newly onboarded staff were divided into six groups, with each group making presentations based on key areas taught during training. Some of the topics include change management, effective internal and external communications in the civil and public service, corruption in the public service space and its consequences, an overview of Civil and Public service rules and regulations, and policies and practices.

The presentations were a testimony to the impact of the training on the new staff; the presentations gave the staff the avenue to internalize some of the lessons learned in the course of the training. There was also an assessment on the trainings.

Reacting to the presentation on corruption in the service, the Head of Service stated that “corruption is a cancer and eats away our citizens’ faith in democracy. It scares away investment; if we don’t kill corruption in the service, it will kill the service.” He added that the e-gov system will greatly curb corruption in the civil and public service as it makes for transparent processing and assessment of documents.

Barr. Okungbowa also admonished them to be the change they want to see, in his words “if you don’t change, others will not change, change begins with you especially now that the service is now being, radicalized”

Speaking on behalf of the new staff, Mr. Kester Igiebor , Ministry of Finance, Budget, Economic Planning and Development appreciated the State Government for putting up the exercise, which, according to him, has helped him and his colleagues to gain a deeper understanding of the service and will guide them in carrying out their duties judiciously to ensure that the high standards they met in the system are sustained.
