Good Friday: Obaseki tasks Christians on love, neighbourliness to overcome COVID-19 disruptions

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has tasked Christians to show passion for the downtrodden and love one another in the spirit of Good Friday, noting that such virtues were necessary to cope with the disruptions caused by the coronavirus outbreak across the globe.

In a statement, the governor, who admonished Christians to uphold the spirit of togetherness by checking on one another this period, stressed the need to maintain social relations through digital channels while staying at home.

He said the state government is deploying relief materials to the poorest of the poor in the state, including the elderly, physically challenged, widows, among others, to assuage the economic hardship caused by the restrictions imposed in the state to curtail the spread of coronavirus.

According to him, “As Christian faithful celebrate the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on Calvary this Easter season, I urge everyone to reflect on the essence of this day, the value of selfless giving and passion for the downtrodden.

“In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, as we celebrate, we should remember to be our brother’s keeper, uphold the spirit of togetherness and sacrifice for the greater good of all.

He urged Edo residents to adhere to government’s directive on good hygiene and safety, including regular washing of the hands, use of sanitisers and observing social distancing.

He said government would be collaborating with traditional and religious leaders to distribute the relief materials to ensure that the items get to those who genuinely need them.

“In the spirit of the season and to lessen the economic burden caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the state government would distribute relief materials to the poorest of the poor in the state. We are collaborating with community leaders and religious bodies to ensure that the packages get to the poor,” he added.
