The Edo State Government has said the state’s Health Insurance Scheme (Edo-HIS) will further strengthen healthcare delivery, reduce mortality and tackle the burden of out-of-pocket health expenditure in the state.

The Director General (DG), Edo State Health Insurance Commission, Dr. Rock Amegor, disclosed this when he received members of Edo Progressive Indigenous Association (EPIA), a non-governmental organization, who were on courtesy visit to the Edo-HIS office in Benin City.

Amegor noted that the commission has commenced enrolment of beneficiaries into the Edo-HIS with civil and public servants in Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the state.

He added that the Edo Health Insurance Scheme is an initiative of the Godwin Obaseki-led administration designed to provide fully operational health insurance coverage for all Edo State residents.

The Director General further expressed appreciation to members of EPIA for supporting the state government in ensuring the provision of accessible, quality and affordable healthcare for residents in the state

He stated that the commission plans to enroll over 25,000 residents in the state for the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF), which is an initiative of the federal government, implemented by the state government under the equity plan of the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme, adding that “the fund will help the vulnerable persons get access to free medicare.”

In his remarks, President of EPIA, Chief Dr. Omogiade Edokpolor, urged residents to take advantage of the Edo Health Insurance Scheme to access quality and affordable healthcare services.

He commended the Edo State Government for taking deliberate steps toward providing universal health coverage for residents in the state with the establishment of the Edo State Health Insurance Commission.

Edokpolor said the association will support the efforts of the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration to improve access to quality and affordable healthcare for Edo people by encouraging and sensitising citizens to get enrolled in the scheme.
