Edo 2020: Group launches campaign against godfatherism, declares support for Obaseki’s reelection bid
A socio-political group, Bury Godfatherism Movement (BGM), has drummed support to the second term aspiration of the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, vowing to mobilise Edo people to put an end to godfatherism during the state’s governorship election scheduled for September 2020.
The group said it was shocking to see how the suspended National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is aspiring to be the new Edo godfather after the people supported him to defeat godfathers in the state.
Speaking at the launch of its public campaign in Benin City, President of the group, Osamede Oghogho, said it was shameful to see a man who popularised words such as “Let the people Lead”, “No More godfatherism” and “No Man is God,” transform himself into another godfather.
Oghogho said young graduates came together to form the movement for the purpose of ensuring that godfatherism is finally buried in Edo State during the gubernatorial polls in September, adding that the movement will also support the re-election bid of Governor Godwin Obaseki.
According to him, “We are tired of standing by the sidelines and watching ‘agberos’ poised to take over control of Osadebey Avenue and eventually the state’s resources. We restate that it is only in the imagination of Oshiomhole that Obaseki’s credentials are defective.
“Edo people are not cowards to believe anything from a man that speaks from both sides of his mouth. We stand and believe all what Oshiomhole said about Obaseki in 2016. Nothing has changed. We also believe what he told us about Ize-Iyamu and abide by his thoughts that Odubu is not capable of governing Edo State.”
The group added, “September is the month to bury godfatherism in Edo State. The man that Comrade Oshiomhole told us was a thief and cultist will remain a thief and cultist.”
“We urge well-meaning Edolites to join and support this movement. We will distribute free t-shirts and fez caps in the future.
“The mission to finally bury godfatherism this September is a task that must be accomplished by all. Our message to Governor Obaseki is clear and direct: wherever you go, we will go; wherever you choose, we will choose; your party shall be our party, and your God, our God.”
