COVID-19: Edo tests 681 persons in 24 hrs, confirms two new cases

…vaccinates 29, 409 eligible residents

The Edo State Government, as part of efforts to contain the coronavirus (COVID-19), has intensified sample collection activities across the state’s 18 local government areas, testing over 681 persons in the last 24 hours, with only two persons testing positive to the virus.

Edo State COVID-19 Incident Manager, Dr. Andrew Obi disclosed this during the daily virtual meeting of the State COVID-19 Taskforce, chaired by the state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.

Obi, who noted that the state has stepped up the vaccination of eligible members of the public against the infectious disease, urged residents to continue to adhere to the state’s preventive protocols to stop the spread of the virus and avoid reinfection.

Noting that the state was winning the war against the second wave of the pandemic, the Incident Manager, said Edo has continued to record a steady rise in COVID-19 recoveries and a drastic drop in active cases as well as case positivity fatality.

Reassuring the government’s commitment to contain the pandemic and ensure the health of citizens, Obi said all pillars of the state’s COVID-19 management are on alert as the Edo expects an influx of people who will coming into the state for the National Sports Festival, scheduled to take place between April 2 and April 14, 2021.

He stated that the state also recorded five more recoveries within the 24-hour period, with 11 active cases that are being managed at various treatment and isolation facilities in the state, adding that Edo has not recorded any deaths in the last 16 days.

On her part, the Executive Secretary of the state’s Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Julie Erhabor, said the state vaccinated 1, 761 eligible members of the public within the 24-hour period.

She noted that since March 15, 2021 when the state commenced the rollout of the AstraZeneca vaccine, Edo has cumulatively vaccinated 29, 409 persons, with no adverse effects.

Erhabor said the 29, 409 persons include 6680 health workers, 8831 strategic leaders and 13,898 other frontline workers across the state’s 18 LGAS.
