Coronavirus: Edo govt intensifies awareness campaign on use of facemasks, other preventive measures

The Edo State Government has intensified awareness campaign on the need to use facemasks, observe social distancing and other preventive measures to check the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Edo State.

During the sensitization exercise, the Edo State Coordinator, Public Works Volunteers (PUWOV) Scheme, Mukhtar Yusuf-Osagie urged residents to use facemasks and observe other guidelines to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.

Yusuf-Osagie said the state government will commence enforcement from Friday, noting that government has deployed security agencies to ensure residents comply with the directives on wearing of facemasks.

He commended public transport driver’s for obeying the directive on the number of passengers in buses and taxis, while urging them to continue to observe precautionary measures to check the spread of the virus.

“I urge drivers, passengers and all Edo citizens to wear facemask to enable us curtail the spread of the disease in the state. The people should join hands with the government to fight this deadly disease. They are advised to obey directives and adhere to the precautionary measures aimed at checking the spread of the virus in the state.”

Some of the respondents applauded the state government on the directives to check the spread of COVID-19 and protect the people.

One of the residents, Rev. Dr. Jesurobo Emmanuel, said the state government’s directive is well-intentioned as it would help check the spread of coronavirus in the state, adding, “I have my face mask. This is not a government issue. It is everyone’s concern and it is necessary we all come together to fight against this virus.”

Another resident, Miss. Erhun Favor Michael, said she goes about with her sanitiser, which is important to curb the spread of the virus.

A driver identified as Friday Omoruyi, thanked the state government for the sensitisation exercise to enlighten members of the public on the need to support government in checking the spread of coronavirus.
