Carvings

Edo State is popular for carvings dating back to medieval times. The Bini people particularly made career out of this alongside their famous proclivity for bronze cast.

Till date, most of the finest furniture works are also traceable to the state as a result of this historical fact. In Igun Street and several parts of Benin City, wood carvings are a common sight. Tourists throng the city in search of archival work of arts made from wood. They are also believed to be among some of the best in the world with many of them dating back to centuries still on sale.
Most of the carvings depict late monarchs and chiefs particularly the former Obas of Benin. Some of them depict ceremonies, women, events, religious feasts, slaves, etc.
