Shagari, Ekwueme, others meet Jonathan, Mark over logjam
SENATE President David Mark yesterday hosted an array of prominent Nigerians, including the Second Republic President, Alhaji Usman Shehu Shagari and his deputy, Dr. Alex Elex Ekwueme.
Other guests are: the former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Idris Kutigi (rtd), Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd), former Information Minister, Prof. Jerry Gana, former Deputy Senate Leader and Senator Jonathan Zwingina.
The team also visited Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan.
Under the aegis of “Eminent Elders Group”, the team expressed concern over the political situation in the land.
Chaired by Shagari, the group told its hosts that Nigerians were looking up to the upper chamber of the National Assembly to redeem the country.
Shagari, who presented a letter containing the recommendations of the group to Mark, expressed the hope that the Senate would consider the recommendations wisely.
His words: “We were worried about the situation in the country. We were happy to know that you were discussing the same thing that we were discussing yesterday.
“Everything depends on you. Everything depends on your decision.”
The former president said that a similar letter had been sent to President Umaru Yar’Adua, Jonathan and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole.
Replying, Mark, who expressed appreciation to the eminent personalities for the visit, said that the upper chamber would surely benefit from their wealth of experience.
He said: “The experience this group will bring on board will be immeasurable. We believe that we need to be notified that the president is on medical vacation.
“In doing this, we were conscious of the security, political and power balancing in this country. The unity of this country is of utmost importance.
“We are humbled by your humility. We are anxious to put this impasse behind us so that we can make progress.”
