Govt 'll review AAU school fees, says Oshiomhole



BENIN CITY - Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has promised that the Government will take a second look at the school fees of the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, with a view to reviewing it downwards.

Students of the university had gone on the rampage last Monday after news filtered in that the Government planned to review the school fees upwards.

Oshiomhole made Government’s position known in Benin City, weekend, during a coutesy visit to him by a delegation of the National Association of Edo State Students.

The Governor also said government will provide grants to improve learning and provision of infrastructure for the university.

According to Comrade Oshiomhole, the students do not have to protest before they are listened to by the government that is student -friendly.

He disclosed that every kobo generated by the university administration will be re-injected back into the institution, assuring that “we will leave AAU better than we met it.” On the violent protest that erupted at the AAU, the governor observed that no genuine student will attack the Student Union vehicles.

Speaking, Coordinator of the part-time students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma has blamed the AAU crisis on a leading politician of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) The Co-ordinator, Comrade Matthew Ehidiameh disclosed that the protest was orchestrated by some elements that are bent on destroying Edo State.

“Though we are against any increment of school fees, yet, we do not subscribe to any act of violence, therefore, rioting and arson were not in the contemplation of the Part-time Students of Ambrose Alli University, “ the students noted.

He said: “We are aware that Prof. Julius Ihonvbere had before the unfortunate incident held a series of meetings with some students, and local PDP thugs , where the uprising was planned”, he added.

The Part-time Students disclosed that they believed in dialogue and negotiation as a right channel for pursuing their cause, stressing, “we are convinced that Governor Adams Oshiomhole is taking a positive view of our case for modest and affordable increase in fees.”
