Oshiomhole hails Reps over Edo LG motion *Swears-in probe panel

Edo State Governor has commended members of the House of Representatives for throwing out a motion sponsored by Hon Tunde Akogun and Patrick Obahiagbon, seeking to declare as illegal, null and void the removal of the Chairmen of Akoko Edo and Orhionmwon Local Government Councils, Johnson Emasealu and Patrick Aisien respectively.

The Governor who spoke yesterday during the swearing-in of Acting Chairmen for the Council said “let me use this opportunity to comment on what I believe some of you might have watched on the proceedings at the House of Representatives in Abuja . We saw a dying godfather mobilising completely disillusioned followers as few as they are, beneficiaries of his weakened machinery to sponsor a motion through the House of Reps for it to condemn the suspension of the Chairmen.”

The Governor queried why they went through the House of Representatives rather than the State House of Assembly which had the mandate to look into such matters.

He said “the right to have done was to run to the State House of Assembly, but they couldn’t do that, because you know, no condition is permanent. The situation in the House is not as it used to be.”

The Governor showered praises on members of the House of Representatives “for doing the right thing. Because, we still have men and women of character in the National Assembly who put Nigeria first rather than party allegiance. They stood by what is right and I salute their courage, their forthrightness in doing the right thing”, Oshiomhole said.

Meantime, the Governor yesterday set up two commissions of enquiry with a charge to carry out their assignment with all diligence.

At the swearing-in of retired Justice Momodu Raji for Akoko Edo Local Government and retired Justice Sam Elahor for Orhhionmwon Local Government, governor Oshiomhole said “we decided to appoint retired justices because we want the commission to be divorced from politics.

“We are confident that you have all the qualities and qualifications required.

“We decided to set up this commission in response to series of allegations that bothers on financial malpractices, embezzlement, inflation of contracts, award of contracts without due process or spending funds that were not appropriated for and generally conducting the affairs of the Local Government in a manner that completely alienated the people in those localities.”

Speaking on behalf of other members of the two commissions, retired Justice Raji promised that they would do their best according to the oaths they took without committing any infraction.
