Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has advised council chairmen in the state to be prudent in their spending, warning that anyone found wanting in fiscal responsibility would not go scot-free.
Comrade Oshiomhole gave the advice yesterday at the swearing in of the Acting Chairmen for Akoko Edo and Orhiomwon Local Government Areas.
According to the governor, “you are taking over enormous responsibility of your people in those two local governments. First to re-earn the confidence of our people and to re-assure them that the funds of the local government would be applied in a way that would touch the greatest number of people in that local government and to make a difference in the management of finances, including paying attention to due process.”
The governor urged the Acting Chairmen to ensure that they spend within the appropriation law, urging them to re-invent governance and bring the dividends of democracy to the people.
He declared that from the reaction of the people to the decision of government, it shows that “the people had been reduced to distant observers in a political environment in which they ought to be the drivers. The task of re-integrating them is now your responsibility.”
The governor re-stated the commitment of government to managing public fund for public good, adding that government does not discriminate but would act according to the law.
“I want to use this opportunity to advise you and indeed warn all the local government chairmen that they should not live under the illusion that because you are connected, you abuse the rules or misuse finances entrusted to the local government. You would not go freely.”
The Governor commended the House of Representatives for dismissing a motion sponsored by PDP chieftain, Colonel Tunde Akogun (rtd) to sanction Edo state, stressing that they have shown an uncommon courage. He assured the council chairmen of his support while advising the council chairmen to consult interest groups in decision making.
