Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has hailed Chief Anthony Enahoro’s contributions to the nation’s development as he clocks 87, today, July 22.
The Governor in a letter said: “I am very pleased to felicitate with you on this auspicious occasion. I join your family and your numerous admirers across all generations all over Nigeria to thank God for preserving you thus far.
“This is an opportunity to celebrate your life and your contributions to national development, especially in politics, journalism and recent pro-democracy struggles.
“Together with leading titans like Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Mr. Herbert Macaulay, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Comrade Michael Imoudu, you transformed the anti-colonial aspirations of the Nigerian people into a
relentless, effective and purposeful popular movement.
“The early impact you made in journalism compares in its fervour and intensity with your parliamentary interventions during the nationalist period. Today, the story of the struggle for Nigeria’s independence is incomplete without your bold motion for independence in 1953. The philosophical depth, literary rigour and passion in that motion entitled “Let my People Go” recalls the weighty thoughts of such revolutionary icons as Fidel Castro, Kwame Nkrumah and Nelson Mandela.
“Nigerians remain impressed by your consistency, particularly during the brutal military dictatorship of the 1990s. Your leadership role in the formation of the National Democratic Coalition [NADECO] stands out as a fundamental contribution to building the capacity of the Nigerian people to effectively resist military dictatorship.
“As an elder statesman, your regular comments on the state of the nation, notably the distributive imperfections in the polity, cannot be ignored, because of your deep introspection and the ethical vitality of your thoughts.
“I am proud of you as an authentic Edo Brand and your contributions to Nigeria. Our prayer is that God will continue to strengthen you in health and wisdom, so that Nigeria can still benefit from your intellectual resourcefulness and the inspiration you provide those of us who insist that our country must be better.”
