The Ministry of Environment and Public Utilities came into being at the inception of this administration on the 12th of November, 2009. Prior to this time, it was known as the Ministry of Environment and Transport with the merger of the erstwhile Ministries of Environment and Transport in July, 2007. It is to be noted that at the Ministry transformed from the Edo State Environmental Protection Board (EDSEPA) into a full fledged Ministry in line with national trend on the 10th of April, 2000. Shortly after, Solid Minerals Arm was added, but was later excised in 2006 and taken to the Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Special Duties. The Ministry has Prince Clem Agba as Commissioner, while Engr. Jerry I. Ekenimoh is the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry.

The Ministry is regulatory body saddled with the responsibility of managing the environment on behalf of the State. In managing the environment, the Ministry tackles all environmental problems ranging from Waste Management, Flood and Erosion Control, forest depletion and degradation and general environmental and atmospheric pollution.

There are five departments and one Parastatal. They are as follows: -

i. Department of Administration and Supplies;
ii. Department of Finance and Accounts;
iii. Department of Environment;
iv. Department of Forest Management and Utilization;
v. Department of Forest Conservation and Regeneration; and
vi. The Parastatal: Edo State Environmental and Waste Management Board.

  The assigned responsiblities to the Ministry are:
Enviromental Policies
Eviromental protection and control ;
Environmental Technology including initiation of policy in relation to environmental research and technology
Planning designing and construction of ecological and environmental facilities;
Supervision of the Office of the Accountant-General;
Environmental Sanitation and Urban Waste Disposal and Management
Provision of Sanitary means o fhuman disposal;
Liasing with oil companies on pollution and Environmental Matters:
Supervision of Edo State Enviromental Protection Agency (EDSEPA)
Forestry
Soil and water conservation
Wild life Preservation
Botanical Gardens;
