The Ministry was formerly a Directorate under the Deputy Governor’s Office. It was upgraded to a full-fledged Ministry in 2005.
Administratively, the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs is made up of five Departments and they are:
- Departments of Administration and Supply
- Inspectorate and Monitoring Services
- Department of Finance and Accounts.
Since May 29 2007, the Ministry has succeeded in re-focusing the direction of governance for service delivery. They include:
- Furnishing of office to replace the worn-out and broken furniture which the Ministry has been using since as a directorate.
- Installation of Radio equipment in the Ministry for easy and prompt communication with the 18 Local Government Councils in the State.
- The Ministry was able to douse tension among warring communities; between Enwan and Akuku in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area and the clan headship dispute in South Ibie are among the intractable ones.
- The Ministry also successfully facilitated the prompt disbursement of funds accruable to the 18 Local Government Councils from the Federal Allocation Account Committee monthly meetings.
- The Local Government Council also pay the salaries of their workers on or before the last work day of every month in compliance with the directive of the State Governor, Senator (Professor) Oserheimen Osunbor.
- The Ministry also facilitated the approval by the State Executive Council of the appointment of the following traditional rulers:
- His Royal Highness, J.O.Okhiria as the Clan Head (Onotare) of Ozalla in Owan West Local Government Area.
- His Royal Highness, Ebozehi Ozogula as the Clan Head (Odibiado) of Sobe in Owan West Local Government Area.
The Ministry, in partnership with the State Ministry of Environment and Transport is vigorously prosecuting the environmental sanitation campaign by the State Government.
