Gov Oshiomhole swears-in additional JSC member

Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has sworn-in an additional member of the State Judicial Service Commission, Prince Allan Omogbai, with a call on the political elite not to politicize the appointment of judicial officers.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of the additional member of the State Judicial Service Commission at the Government House, the state governor noted that merit alone should be allowed to determine who becomes a judge.

According to him, this is because the power of the judge is so critical in the administration of justice.
“If we appoint our brothers, friends, children and political associates as judicial officials when we know that they do not have the requisite qualification or the strength of character, necessary to ensure that all manners of persons who appear in the court of law can expect to get justice, then we would have failed as a state” he noted.

The governor opined that, “our democracy cannot flourish without the rule of law and the rule of law will remain rhetoric if we do not have courageous judicial officers”.

The governor said many people have observed that under civilian dispensation, political considerations seem to outweigh other considerations in the appointment of judges.

He disclosed that in nominating Prince Omogbai to the position, the state government has taken into account his experiences as a lawyer, administrator, Local Government Chairman and Attorney General which have prepared him squarely for the challenges of being an effective member of the State Judicial Service Commission.

The governor noted that with the membership of Prince Allan Omogbai, the Commission has formed a quorum as it has three statutory members already.

Responding, after subscribing to the oath of allegiance and oath of office, Prince Allan Omogbai thanked the governor for the appointment and promised that the Commission will give every support that the judiciary needs.
