EDO STATE BEGINS BIOMETRIC PROJECT TRAINING

The Edo State Government has flagged off its Biometric Awareness Campaign workshop in order to ascertain the accurate workers in government’s employment and also eliminate major hiccups in paying workers’ salary.

The Executive Director, Information and Communication Technology, Government House, Mrs. Yemi Keri, while delivering her keynote address on Biometric Verification Awareness Campaign, said all over the world, the challenges of managing an efficient and service-oriented bureaucracy is a major hurdle the government and social scientists in and outside the academia have been attempting to unravel over the years.

She said it would require every worker who draws his or her remuneration from the government’s coffers to physically present themselves for finger printing after which specific electronic identity card is produced for the worker.

The card, in addition to the picture, contains major data of the person and it will aid in the payment of salaries, taxation, utility bill payment and every other activity the staff will be involved in”, she added.

Continuing, Mrs. Keri said the project had been compartmentalized into three different phases.

The first phase, according to her, is a staff audit exercise, which requires a kind of census.

The second phase, she said, would involve a comprehensive verification and biometric exercise across the state’s entire workforce, while the third phase involves the automation of the payroll and pension system.

The ceremony, flagged off by the Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Pally Iriase, was organized for Commissioners, Heads of Parastatals, Special Advisers, and Directors in various ministries.
